  • Volkswagen announces the integration of AI into the myVW mobile app to improve the ownership experience for its customers. The strategic partnership with Google Cloud is helping the automotive leader make vehicle management more intuitive and accessible with its new myVW Virtual Assistant.
  • The introduction of generative AI within the myVW mobile app showcases a significant step towards integrating AI into the traditional vehicle ownership experience. With this AI integration, featuring Google Cloud’s powerful Vertex AI, can Volkswagen take the lead among AI-focused carmakers?

Google Cloud and Volkswagen jointly reveal an innovative new addition to the carmaker’s digital ecosystem with the incorporation of generative AI into its myVW mobile app. Through this strategic collaboration, Volkswagen’s new myVW Virtual Assistant will be powered by Google Cloud’s cutting-edge Vertex AI, providing VW drivers easy access to vital vehicle data and services.

The Virtual Assistant, powered by BigQuery and Vertex AI from Google Cloud, gathers insights from a range of sources, such as FAQs, owner’s manuals, and training videos to provide users with detailed information. Additionally, the AI Virtual Assistant is already accessible to owners of select 2024 VW models, enabling them to ask informative questions about their vehicle, such as guidance on replacing a flat tire or understanding what an indicator light on the instrument panel means.

The Virtual Assistant also provides prompt and precise answers by combining Google Cloud’s Gemini models on the Vertex AI platform with data from Volkswagen’s automobiles. With Gemini’s vast multi-modal features, users can instantaneously discover important information by simply pointing their smartphone cameras at their car’s dashboard.

Regarding the intent behind this partnership, Volkswagen Group of America’s Chief Information Officer, Abdallah Shanti, stated, ”We’re driven to introduce new technologies and features that enhance the ownership experience for all of our Volkswagen customers and create love for our vehicles.” He also praised the collaboration with Google Cloud which will bring innovative capabilities to VW’s customers and cars.

Thomas Kurian, the CEO of Google Cloud, said that this partnership will help Volkswagen set a new standard for driver experiences by leveraging the power of advanced generative AI and delivering it directly to the customers. He stressed that Volkswagen users “now have highly personalized vehicle support at their fingertips.”

Volkswagen’s AI integration is indicative of the automobile industry’s wider trend toward digital transformation, as it hopes to revolutionize customer experiences and vehicle management. Implementing generative AI is changing the way drivers interface with their vehicle’s technology and is helping carmakers meet the demand for more personalized support. While most automobile leaders have already adopted AI across applications, Volkswagen has hit the sweet spot by making vehicle information and support accessible through an AI agent. Will other carmakers follow suit or will Volkswagen race ahead remains to be seen.
