Cambridge, United States – 1st October 2024 – Leveraging the power of Generative AI, researchers at MIT and KASIKORN Labs have developed a solution that simulates the future selves of users. The AI system, called Future You, offers a text-based chat interface to allow users to talk to their 60-year-old simulation.
The solution focuses on future self-continuity, a concept from psychology that describes how connected an individual feels with their future self. A positive future self-continuity can lead to better mental health and long-term decisions. Pattie Maes, who was involved with the project, said,
“Future You is much more detailed than what a person could come up with by just imagining their future selves.”
The AI solution is based on ChatGPT, an AI chatbot trained extensively in people’s lives, careers, and experiences. This allows the AI model to create a “time machine” that simulates the user’s future self aged 60. The initial study reports users feeling less anxious and more connected with their future self.

The academic paper on MIT’s Future You was authored by Pat Pataranutaporn, a Media Lab doctoral graduate working actively on developing and advancing human-AI interactions at MIT.
Co-authors of the paper include KASIKORN Labs researchers Kavin Winson, Auttasak Lapapirojn and Pichayoot Ouppaphan as well as Harvard University undergraduate Peggy Yin.
The senior authors are Monchai Lertsutthiwong, who heads AI research at the KASIKORN Business-Technology Group and Pattie Maes who heads the Fluid Interfaces group at MIT. The integration of AI with human psychology was overseen by Hal Hershfield, a professor of marketing, behavioral decision-making and psychology at UCLA.
