Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – 1 October 2024-The tech giant has turned the sod on the construction of a $2 billion data center and cloud region in Malaysia which reflects its strategy of further advances on the expansion of the company.
This new structure is expected to be an important part of the country’s infrastructure in relation to cloud services and enhanced data management as well as environmental sustainability policies, considering the level of the cloud economy in Malaysia.
This project planned in Johor state complements Google’s plan to expand further into Southeast Asia which has been undergoing rapid digitalization.
With this data center, Malaysia will participate in the operations of Google at a regional level by offering data services to businesses in the Asia Pacific region with minimal access time.
Stephanie Davis, Google’s Vice President, of Southeast Asia said recently,
This investment underscores our long-term dedication to helping Malaysia build its digital future. Our cloud region will enable businesses to innovate faster and drive economic growth through digital transformation.”
New regions are expected to have some support for absolutely any type of business from finance to manufacturing providing the new cloud capabilities.
Not only have they invested in infrastructure, but they have also taken the initiative with sustainability and workforce development. The firm has plans for programs aimed at training local talent in digital technologies and advocating for green practices.
We’re not just investing in data centers; we’re investing in the people and future of Malaysia,” said Davis.
Though the full timeline for the project’s completion has yet to be confirmed, Google emphasized its commitment to working closely with local partners and communities to ensure the success of the project. More details about the company’s sustainability goals and skilling programs are expected to follow in the coming months.
