Webroot Report Highlights Growing AI Privacy Concerns In 2024
Webroot Report: Only 27% Consumers Use Privacy Tools Against Gen AI

Waterloo, Ontario – 3rd October 2024 – OpenText’s Webroot 2024 GenAI Consumer Trends And Privacy Research reveals that while 39% of Americans use generative AI at least once a week, privacy concerns remain high, especially among parents.

With only 27% professionals securing workplace data while leveraging Gen AI, the report highlights a significant risk of AI systems collecting private data.

According to OpenText’s Webroot 2024 GenAI Consumer Trends and Privacy Report, there are growing concerns about privacy, particularly among parents, as Gen AI adoption and applications proliferate.

Even though many people prioritize protecting their personal data, only 27% of respondents use privacy solutions to secure business data while leveraging Gen AI tools.

According to the eye-opening report, Gen AI is increasingly being used for fraud, with the FTC naming five new consumer threats that use AI. It highlights that 90% of respondents have concerns regarding AI systems collecting their data.

Additionally, 77% of parents expressed concerns about their children’s privacy while using Generative AI. While the majority of parents keep an eye on their kids’ activities or implement privacy restrictions, 85% are more concerned about AI collecting data than they are about video games.

Other key observations of the report include the fact that 16% professionals don’t know how to protect their business information from Gen AI systems. Even more shocking is that 9% do not have the know-how to protect their data but are also not concerned about it.

The EVP and chief product officer of OpenText, Muhi Majzoub, underlined the growing access to Gen AI technologies, warning that,

“it’s essential to have straightforward privacy and security solutions and transparent data collection practices so everyone can use generative AI safely.”

The report, conducted by surveying 1,014 consumers in the United States, concludes that it is vital to deploy improved data privacy protection and create awareness in business settings, given the anticipated increase in the adoption of Generative AI.
