On October 15, 2024, Ericsson and Zain Group extend their agreement on a sustainability-focused Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) towards enhancing energy-efficient networks in the Middle Eastern regions clearing out more precipitation.
The agreement, more particularly concerning energy efficiency and carbon saving, builds upon successful joint initiatives since 2023 regarding the live networks of Zain.
In Bahrain, Zain undertook using Ericsson’s 5G solutions and the small-weight Massive MIMO antenna AIR 3268 and has achieved 18% less energy consumption.
Further measurement of energy use reduction using a trial of Ericsson’s energy optimization software was successful recording 35% lower use of site energy.

“This partnership emphasizes our strategy on sustainability and net zero achievement”.
Both companies have been interested in implementing energy efficiency measures, and Zain Bahrain updated 80 sites reducing emissions by 50%. Best examples of decarbonization and intelligent network operations were also shared during global workshops and forums held within the framework of this cooperation.

“Ericsson’s technology gives service providers the opportunity to decrease their harmful impact on the environment and improve network performance at the same time.”
The companies are now looking into the next steps in embedding energy-efficient 5G radios and extending the engagement in reducing e-waste by means of Ericsson’s Product Take-Back Program.
The growth of the global ICT industry means that it is important to have partnerships like this to help lessen industrial emissions. As Ericsson Research points out, connectivity solutions might reduce emissions globally by 15% by the year 2030.
