AI Poised to Ease Administrative Strain in the US Healthcare Industry

October 17, 2024 – Sunnyvale,-A research conducted by Google Cloud and The Harris Poll brings forth key administrative burdens that seem to haunt the American healthcare system.

Clinicians, medical office workers, and claims workers spend approximately 28 to 36 hours every week on non-medical services like following up with and updating patient charts, filing insurance claims, and writing case histories among others.

This deluge of administration tasks not only adds to the level of professional fatigue but also worsens the already existing shortage of staffing resources hence, decreasing hours spent attending to patients directly.

These intensive tasks are however likely to be performed by Generative AI and thus incorporating AI into the healthcare system turns out to be beneficial.

“We’ve seen firsthand how generative AI can significantly boost employee productivity. We built an AI-enabled chat tool, powered by Google’s Gemini large language model (LLM), that helps with administrative tasks like summarizing meeting notes, drafting emails,  preparing for conversations and summarizing articles and research,”

Said Sameer Sethi, SVP and chief data and analytics officer, Hackensack Meridian Health.

“This tool is already freeing up our team members to focus on what matters most: providing exceptional patient care.”

The healthcare sector has deployed AI tools for reducing repetitive activities such as summarizing the minutes of meetings and writing emails and other types of correspondence in order to increase the time available for staff to interact with patients.

Similarly, HCA Healthcare is using AI to improve the way patient information is shared.

“Generative AI is transforming how critical patient information is communicated between nurses,”

Said Michael J. Schlosser, SVP of Care Transformation and Innovation. By eliminating manual processes, this technology is enhancing both efficiency and care quality.

The survey found 91% of healthcare practitioners accept AI for nonclinical responsibilities which demonstrates the increasing integration of AI in the industry.

Since it could use its ability to enhance processes, minimize mistakes, and lessen workforce burden, generative AI could permanently transform the healthcare sector.
