Kawasaki and Nagoya, Japan, October 24, 2024 — Fujitsu Limited and Toyota Systems Corporation jointly announced today that field tests with generative AI have cut standard core system upgrade times by 50 %.
During the trials conducted using approximately 15,000 files in Java and SQLJ, Fujitsu’s generative AI was employed to automate the process of identifying incompatibilities and correcting bugs in the programs.
This was an arduous task that usually required significant manpower. However, since AI was applied, the time and resources required for performing the advancements were drastically reduced.
The trials started in October 2023, taking advantage of Toyota Systems’ knowledge in developing core systems and Fujitsu’s knowledge in AI and application development.
Endorsing AI in performing the involved tasks sped up the update’s completion time as changes in the operating system and programming language correspondence are no longer manual.
“The most critical value of this approach lies in the sharp reduction of the operational burden of system updates,”
Added Naoki Ito, Senior Executive Director, Toyota Systems Corporation.
Toyota Systems plans to start deploying the technology in January 2025, thanks to the encouraging trial results. In the future, both companies intend to apply AI further to other programming languages and for system validation as well.
“We see floating resources and generative AI being crucial in making system development more efficient allowing for more C resources to be directed towards creating new ideas,”
Said Takahiro Miyamoto, Head of AI Solutions, Fujitsu Limited.
Fujitsu is targeting this AI service for commercialization to support the digital transformation (DX) of the Toyota Group and expedite the updating of systems for production, logistics, and sales.
Both companies intend to increase the scope of AI use to improve the efficiency of processes and develop the mobility industry further.
