Kigali, Rwanda, November 5, 2024 – MTN Rwanda together with Ericsson has announced the successful implementation of a network modernization and expansion project in Kigali, which is an important step in the digital transformation of Rwanda. The project is aimed at improving network coverage, enhancing the end-user experience, and preparing for the 5G rollout.
The modernization project has introduced energy-efficient multi-band and multi-sector radios from the Ericsson Radio System portfolio which expand digital access in the region while still supporting MTN’s environmental agenda.
“Our commitment to ensuring that every Rwandan experiences the benefits of a modern, connected life is at the core of this partnership with Ericsson,” stated Mapula Bodibe, MTN Rwanda’s Chief Executive Officer. She emphasized the project’s alignment with Rwanda’s economic and social development goals.
“The modernization project brings important improvements to MTN Rwanda’s network,” explained Eugen Gakwerere, MTN Rwanda’s Acting Chief Technology and Innovation Officer, highlighting the expansion of coverage to underserved areas and increased network capacity.
“Ericsson is committed to supporting MTN Rwanda in connecting the lives of Rwandans,” added Hossam Kandeel, Vice President and Head of Global Customer Unit MTN at Ericsson Middle East and Africa, emphasizing their #AfricaInMotion vision.
“The modernization will enhance user experiences and expand the connectivity of the nation. Our partnership with MTN Rwanda is a stepping stone to driving digital and financial inclusion in the country in line with our #AfricaInMotion vision to empower a sustainable and connected Africa.”
This collaboration aims at improving digital infrastructure in addition to contributing to the environmental initiative of MTN’s Road to Zero environmental which seeks to create less energy and space-consuming sites. Enhanced education, healthcare, and digital services will be accessible with the upgraded network as it also seeks to complement the socio-economic development of Rwanda while gearing up for the next generation’s mobile technology.
