Ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has issued an advisory to political parties to ensure the responsible and transparent use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-generated content in their campaigns.
The directive comes just days after an FIR was filed against the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for allegedly posting AI-generated photos and videos of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah on its official media handle.
The advisory says, “In recent years, advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) have enabled the creation of highly convincing synthetic content, including images, video, and audio. With the increasing use of AI technologies in political campaigning, it is essential to maintain transparency and accountability, as AI-generated content, including images, videos, and audio, has the potential to influence voter opinion and trust.”
ECI To Ensure Fair Use of AI in Political Campaigns
The advisory, issued on January 16, 2024, mandates political parties to label any AI-generated or significantly altered content, including images, videos, and audio, with appropriate notations such as “AI-Generated,” “Digitally Enhances,” or “Synthetic Content.” This initiative aims to stop the potential misuse of deepfake technology and AI-generated misinformation, which could distort the electoral process and mislead voters.
The poll body has previously issued similar guidelines ahead of the 2023 Lok Sabha elections to prevent the dissemination of AI-generated disinformation. The new advisory reinforces these measures by highlighting the need for disclaimers in campaign advertisements and promotional content, whether online or on other media platforms.
Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, during a press conference announcing the election dates, highlighted the importance of vigilance against AI-driven misinformation. He directed authorities to act swiftly against any attempts to spread false information that could undermine public trust in the electoral process.
The Delhi Assembly elections for 70 constituencies are scheduled for February 5, with the counting of votes set to take place on February 8.
