WSD’s Water-smart Taskforce Tackles High Water Consumption

Hong Kong – The Water Supplies Department (WSD) of Hong Kong has introduced a novel Water-smart Taskforce Programme to reduce the overconsumption of water through the use of artificial intelligence. The program, in partnership with the Centre for Water Technology and Policy at the University of Hong Kong, runs from February 2025 to early 2026. It will offer personalized water-saving advice to participants who are identified as high water consumers.

High-resolution smart devices will be fitted to selected billing meters to study water usage patterns with AI. The technology will provide detailed reports that will offer customized water-saving recommendations and alert participants to potential leaks. Participation is free, and eligible customers are being invited in batches.

It aims at saving 500,000 cubic meters of water in 2025, equivalent to the capacity of 200 Olympic-sized swimming pools. The first pilot trial, conducted in Tai O, indicated the program’s success as 6% savings in water consumption were achieved from participating households.

WSD statistics indicate that 1% of customers are responsible for about 30% of the consumption of water from all sources in Hong Kong. This initiative seeks to address that imbalance while encouraging sustainable practices. This goes in tandem with the “Save Water Today for a Sustainable Future” campaign that is also ongoing. Households have registered a 12% reduction in daily per capita water use from 151 liters during the pandemic to the current 133 liters per day.

This pioneering program underlines WSD’s commitment to promoting water conservation through advanced technology, especially as it works toward an even more sustainable future for Hong Kong.
