London – The UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has extended its partnership with Kyndryl, the world’s leading IT infrastructure services company, by a £2.28M one-year contract. It seeks to upgrade the core network infrastructure of Defra to improve its digital modernization journey, as the department delivers essential services including facilitating trade, protecting floods, preventing diseases and other critical functions in the lives of citizens in the UK.
Under the new deal, Kyndryl will target technical debt reduction and help in the progression of Defra’s cloud. The partnership includes managing Defra’s networks, modernization of outdated IT systems, and improving critical applications and services including the Animal Disease Testing Service operated by the Animal and Plant Health Agency. All of these are a broad aim within Defra to ensure operational efficiency and sustainability.
Defra will also benefit from Kyndryl’s vast experience when preparing for the next step of adoption into hybrid cloud, where next-generation technologies like 5G-enabled edge computing and software-defined networking will become more mainstream. During the past year, Kyndryl has played an important role in refreshing end-of-life infrastructure while ensuring resilience through peak network demands.
“This renewed partnership with Defra is an exciting step forward as we continue to support them in managing their core network infrastructure all while ensuring the delivery of critical services that millions of UK citizens rely on daily,” said John Chambers, President of Kyndryl United Kingdom and Ireland.
He emphasized how Kyndryl aligns with Defra‘s goals of a greener, more prosperous UK, “Defra’s ambitious roadmap for a cleaner, greener and more prosperous country aligns perfectly with Kyndryl’s commitment to empowering the UK’s public sector to deliver better services and enhance people’s lives.”
The collaboration would highlight the fact that Defra is more interested in modernizing public services, and consequently, legacy systems. With this collaboration, Defra develops a resilient, sustainable digital framework for its infrastructure that supports its environmental and economic goals for the UK.
This contract extension signifies the need for innovation and collaboration in transforming key public services into long-term sustainable services.
