Sam Altman Turns Down Elon Musk’s $97.4B Offer for OpenAI

Sam Altman Turns Down Elon Musk’s $97.4B Offer for OpenAI

The ongoing beef between two tech moguls, Elon Musk and Sam Altman has been turned into a bidding war. During a high-profile discussion at the Paris AI Action Summit, Sam swiftly turned down the $97.4 billion acquisition offer for OpenAI, an artificial intelligence company.

When asked about Musk’s bid, he dismissed it as another attempt by Musk to interfere with the AI firm’s operations. “Elon has been trying various strategies for quite some time. This is merely the latest — you know, this week’s installment.” During the interview, he made clear that OpenAI is “not for sale.”

In response, Sam Altman backfired with a counter bid, saying “No thank you but we will buy Twitter for $9.74 billion if you want.”

Why Elon Musk Opposes OpenAI?

Musk’s unsolicited big has sparked a fresh controversy in the tech community. For reference, Musk co-founded the AI firm but left in 2018 over his different stance with the team. Since then, he has been repeatedly targeting an AI lab, including multiple lawsuits against the organization for allegedly straying from its original non-profit mission.

The battle between two goliaths split the community into two. While some see it as a strategic tactic to hinder the company’s progress, others argue that Musk genuinely believes the company’s transformation into a for-profit entity, which contradicts its initial principles.

According to Elon Musk, OpenAI was supposed to be a non-profit focused on the greater good. Now, it’s chasing profits like any other tech giant.

Musk’s staggering offer, if taken seriously by OpenAI’s board, could complicate its ongoing restructuring efforts. A potential acquisition could disrupt the company’s currency funding strategies and break investor confidence.

For now, OpenAI sounds steadfast in its refusal. Altman, rather than engaging further in the public feud, has chosen to stay focused on the company’s mission. “We will just focus on our work,” he stated.
