OpenAI Unveils ‘Deep Research’ Agent for Advanced Online Analysis

Deep Research, the most recent addition to OpenAI’s catalog and an advanced AI agent, aims to automatically execute multi-step internet research by collating vast amounts of online information into one comprehensive report. The new feature, which is now available for Pro users and will soon be available for Plus and Team subscribers, aims to speed up complex research across a myriad of fields, including finance and engineering.

Deep Research runs on an optimized version of the next OpenAI o3 model and performs analysis and interpretation of data from possibly hundreds of sources in an autonomous manner. It applies reasoning techniques in filtering and collating insights, emulating that of an analyst but in a fraction of the time. In contrast to standard ChatGPT interactions, Deep Research is intended to deal with multifaceted inquiries that require deep contextual understanding and broad web exploration.

With this development, OpenAI is reaffirming its commitment to advancing AGI. The agent finds particularly hard-to-find, niche-level information, thus being valuable to professionals in science, policy, and business, as well as for end customers seeking personalized recommendations for high-consideration purchases.

Every Deep Research output includes citations in detail, a step-by-step record of its reasoning and findings, and robust explanations of the conclusions drawn. Additionally, users can upload spreadsheets and files that will be taken into context when generating specific results. In contrast to standard real-time AI interaction, however, Deep Research takes anywhere between 5 and 30 minutes for completion, thus generating well-documented reports for users instead of quick summaries.

Based on its internal methods of reinforcement learning since OpenAI o1, which showcased strong reasoning in coding and mathematics, Deep Research thereby expands the capabilities of OpenAI in the real-world context, which require information retrieval with a broader purview. They have taken these methods into web research for a more diligent assessment and detailed reporting.

Deep Research can be invoked by users from the ChatGPT message composer, with live updates in the research workflow through a sidebar indicating steps performed and sources consulted. Future releases will add embedded images, illustrative data, and analytic outputs for better elucidation.

With the capability of performing verifiable top-of-the-line research at scale, Deep Research continues OpenAI’s progression toward its broader vision of using AGI to advance scientific and analytical endeavors.
