As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to revolutionize technology, it is also being weaponized by fraudsters to carry out cybercrimes, such as sophisticated scams and attacks. Experts predict a surge in AI-powered cybercrimes, urging individuals and organizations to adopt proactive security measures.
Prasad Patibandla, Director (Research and Operations) at the Centre for Research on Cyber Intelligence and Digital Forensics (CRCIDF), highlighted the growing menace of AI-related cyber threats. “Cybercriminals are exploiting AI in multiple ways to target unsuspecting individuals,” he said.
How AI Is Being Used in Cybercrimes
From AI-generated phishing emails to deepfake scams, cybercriminals are leveraging advanced technology to breach security systems and deceive people. Patibandla explained that AI enables hackers to analyze personal data from social media and other sources to craft highly targeted attacks.
“Hackers can use AI to create messages that appear to come from a trusted source, such as a CEO or a senior executive, requesting sensitive information or financial transactions,” he said. These AI-powered phishing scams are difficult to detect, making them a major cybersecurity concern.
Another alarming trend is the use of AI in social engineering attacks. “AI tools can scrape vast amounts of personal data online, allowing cybercriminals to create highly convincing schemes,” Patibandla added. Cyberstalking, misinformation campaigns, and AI-generated malware are also among the rising threats.
To counter AI-driven cybercrimes, experts recommend implementing AI-based security systems that can detect anomalies and suspicious behavior in real time. “AI can be used to identify unusual patterns, detect new malware strains, and flag phishing attempts before they cause damage,” Patibandla noted.
Organizations are increasingly relying on AI-driven behavioral analytics to monitor network activity and detect potential security breaches. “By analyzing user behavior, AI can help identify threats such as abnormal login attempts or unauthorized access to sensitive files,” he explained.
AI-powered email filters also play a crucial role in preventing phishing scams by detecting and blocking fraudulent messages before they reach inboxes. Additionally, enforcing multi-factor authentication (MFA) and conducting regular security audits can strengthen cybersecurity defenses.
Education & Awareness Are Key
While technology can help mitigate cyber risks, human awareness remains a crucial defense. “AI-based training programs can simulate cyberattacks, helping individuals recognize and respond to threats effectively,” Patibandla stated.
He emphasized the need for government and corporate initiatives to educate the public about AI-driven cyber threats. “Raising awareness about deepfake scams, misinformation, and AI-powered fraud is essential to prevent people from falling victim,” he added.
