Kuala Lumpur, February 17 – At the 54th Executive Board Meeting of the Organization of Asia-Pacific News Agencies (OANA), Bernama’s Chief Executive Officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin made an impassioned appeal for member agencies to embrace artificial intelligence in their operations as one of its ultimate imperatives. In her view, to be ahead of the curve in the fast-changing media environment requires AI.
“As media professionals, we share a responsibility to uphold the values of freedom of expression, ethical reporting, and equitable news dissemination. These principles are the cornerstone of a free and informed society,” said Nur-ul Afida Nur-ul Afida reiterated, emphasizing the shared responsibility of media professionals. Her remarks addressed representatives from 13 international news agencies, including OANA Secretary General Zaman Rezakhani, whereby Nur-ul Afida emphasized the collective responsibility of media professionals to uphold freedom of expression, ethical reporting, and equitable dissemination of news.
Nur-ul Afida observes the significant challenges facing the media industry due to rapid technological changes, audience behavior shifts, and the ubiquitous menace of misinformation. She emphasizes that those changes demand new and collaborative approaches in which AI would be the main player in adaptation.
Proactively, she outlines that Bernama has established an independent fact-checking initiative called MyCheck Malaysia launched in March 2020, and adheres to the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) standards. This fact-checking initiative specifically focuses on matters of social harmony, safety, daily living, and economic welfare. The fact-checking process consists of monitoring sources of potential misinformation, dialogue discussions, painstaking investigation, and transparent reporting.
The meeting provided an opportunity to brainstorm for creating a digital-first and audience-centric approach to combating misinformation versus disinformation. Nur-ul Afida expressed confidence that this meeting would be constructive in providing valuable insights and concrete strategies for members to take back to their respective agencies.
In this regard, she emphasized the critical nature of timing for the meeting, given that Malaysia holds the ASEAN Chairmanship this year under the theme of ‘Inclusivity and Sustainability.’
“Bernama will provide comprehensive coverage of these ASEAN meetings and will share the news on the OANA channel for the benefit of our members,” she said.
Taking a look back at the 54-year OANA legacy since its establishment in 1961, Nur-ul Afida touched upon the enormous coverage by OANA, which is estimated to spread two-thirds of the world’s information. She reiterated that Bernama is proud to have been a part of this journey for over two decades and will continue to uphold this shared mission.
“This impressive legacy is a testament to the collective strength of its members, who share a common commitment to delivering timely, accurate, and balanced news to audiences worldwide,” she remarked.
The 54th OANA Executive Board Meeting notably emphasized the strength of AI adoption and synergy among member agencies to effectively navigate the challenges existing in the contemporary media environment.
