Ola chief Bhavish Aggarwal has announced the launch of Krutrim AI Lab and the release of multiple open-source AI models. These models are designed to focus on India’s diverse linguistic and cultural landscape.
In the post on X, Bhavish unveiled the launch of Krutrim-2, a large language model (LLM) built on the Mistral Nemo architecture and featuring a 12 billion-parameter-dense transformer model.
It took a year to reach Krutrim AI, where the lab is now. Despite this fact, Aggarwal mentioned the importance of open-source collaboration in AI development. “Today, we’re releasing our work to the open-source community and also publishing a bunch of technical reports,” he stated on X.
Apart from Krutrim-2, the lab also revealed information about a numerous suite of AI models based on India’s diverse needs. This includes Chitrarth 1, Dhwani 1, Vyakhyarth 1, and Krutrim Translate 1.
- Chitrarth 1– A Vision-language model for analyzing images and documents.
- Dhwani 1– Speech-Language Model for speech translation.
- Vyakhyarth 1– An Indic Embedding Model for Search and RAG.
- Krutrim Translate 1– A text-to-text translation model for State of the art text to text translation.
To ensure secure and sustainable development, the lab has also developed BharatBench, which is a “natively Indic benchmark that encompasses the linguistic and cultural diversity of the Indic region, ensuring that the evaluations are relevant and representative of real-world use cases in India.”
India’s First GB200 Supercomputer & Krutrim AI Lab’s Partnership with NVIDIA
Bhavish Aggarwal also unveiled Krutrim’s partnership with NVIDIA to deploy India’s first GB200 supercomputer by March 2025. The supercomputer is expected to scale into India’s largest AI computing facility by the end of the year. This development is expected to address challenges in data availability and cultural representation.
To accelerate development, Bhavish also revealed that the lab has committed ₹2,000 crore in investment, with plans to increase this to ₹10,000 crore by 2026.
