Microsoft Enhances Efforts Against Harmful AI-Generated Material

Singapore – In observance of Safer Internet Day 2025, Microsoft is announcing a new set of initiatives to intervene in the climbing tide of concerns over abusive AI-generated content. The ninth edition of Microsoft’s Global Online Safety Survey shows that there has been a leap in AI usage, with 51% of respondents declaring their use of AI technologies, compared with 39% in 2023. The concern over generative AI has also increased, with 88% of survey participants indicating concern, up from 83% last year.

“At Microsoft, we are committed to advancing AI responsibly to realize its benefits. This year’s research underscored the need for media literacy and guidance on the responsible use of AI. Building on the launch of our Family Safety Toolkit last year, we’re pleased to announce new resources,” Microsoft stated in their press release.

One highlight of the survey is that the majority of people cannot reliably identify what is AI-generated; this could amplify the risk of fraudulent applications of AI. The education tools implemented by Microsoft promote responsible AI use:

Partnership with Childnet: Collaborating with Childnet, a UK-based charity, this educational resource intends to counteract the misuse of AI technology, including deepfake generation. The resources provided will be available to schools and families and will teach ways to keep children safe from online threats.

Minecraft “CyberSafe AI: Dig Deeper”: The Minecraft game and Minecraft Education just launched a new educational game that strives to engage youth in AI’s ethical considerations. Players navigate through challenges simulating AI use while promoting responsible digital behavior.

AI Guide for Older Adults: This guide, designed to help those aged 50 and older to have a clearer understanding of AI’s benefits and risks, including keeping themselves safe online, was jointly prepared by OATS-AARP and Microsoft.

These initiatives highlight Microsoft’s intent to create technology responsibly and to protect users from harmful content and influence. Further, the company emphasizes public awareness and education to mitigate the potential dangers of misuse of AI.

According to the Global Online Safety Survey, another 66% of the participants reported having encountered at least one online risk during the previous year. Microsoft thrives to have regulations that are risk-based and proportional, currently working closely with policymakers to address giant concerns with child protection while also protecting freedom of expression and privacy.

“Our approach at Microsoft is centered on empowering users by advancing safety and human rights. We know we have a responsibility to take steps to protect our users from illegal and harmful online content and conduct, as well as to contribute to a safer online ecosystem. At Microsoft, we achieve this balance through carefully tailoring our safety interventions across our different consumer services, depending on the nature of the service and of the harm,” the company continued.

In this ever-evolving AI space, Microsoft aims to make the Earth safer with education and safety.
