Brussels, September 30, 2024 – As part of its request to regulate internal state practices on the use of artificial intelligence, the European Commission has formed a working group of 13 experts to set an AI Code of Conduct. This comes as the EU takes practical steps to ensure that AI is used all over member states in a responsible manner.
The team, composed of professionals working in the spheres of AI ethics, law, and technology, will contribute to developing core principles for AI systems for transparency, safety, and human rights. The Commission plans to circulate the first draft of the Code of Conduct in early 2025.
Thierry Breton, EU Commissioner for Internal Market, assigned to this domain, stressed the significance of this undertaking:
”It is imperative to help steer the development of Artificial Intelligence technologies in the right direction.”
He has also explained that such regulations will assist in aligning artificial intelligence with the other elements of the EU Digital Strategy.
The selected experts will be looking at special issues like privacy, security, and the negative impact of AI on society and its users.
”This is quite there, where human beings truly stand concerned, it’s thinking that AI does not think for PEOPLE,”
said one of the appointed experts, who was reluctant to share his name.
The mission of the Commission with respect to the AI Code of Conduct for Business consists, mainly, of offering such guidance on AI applications by businesses and governments which lets innovation take place without crossing ethical boundaries on the emergence of a new technology. In the upcoming months, more details will follow as the experts commence with practical activities.
