Abu Dhabi, November 2024 – The first Open Source AI Summit Abu Dhabi, organized by the Technology Innovation Institute (TII), has successfully concluded and now opens a way to accelerate the world conversation in open-source AI. Held at The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort, the summit also attracted international AI luminaries from institutions such as Meta, Google DeepMind, Oxford University, and Tsinghua University, alongside regional players like TII and the Inception Institute.
Pressing topics covered during the summit included the availability of open-source AI, ethics, safety, governance, computing sustainability, and international cooperation. The event coincided with heightened global interest in open-source AI, driven by the Open-Source Initiative’s release of its open-source AI definition.
Dr. Najwa Aaraj, CEO of TII, emphasized the summit’s significance:
“The Open Source AI Summit Abu Dhabi represented a defining moment in shaping a future where AI is accessible and beneficial to everyone. By convening the brightest minds from global institutions, we fostered collaboration that transcends borders and drives innovation with equity and safety at its core. This is not just about advancing technology, but about ensuring its responsible and ethical deployment for the benefit of humanity.”
Dr. Hakim Hacid, Chief Researcher at TII’s AI Cross-Center Unit, which pioneered the globally ranked Falcon AI models, added:
“At TII, we focus on the technical depth and innovation needed to create AI systems that are transparent, robust, and scalable. This summit allowed us to engage with global AI experts, ensuring that the future of AI is built on a foundation of collaboration, openness, and responsible development.”
TII’s Falcon AI models, including Falcon 40B, an open-source Large Language Model released in May 2023, have consistently ranked high, recognized by HuggingFace’s industry-standard LLM leaderboard.
The summit further accentuated Abu Dhabi’s influence in AI by promoting cooperation toward solutions for technology governance, sustainability, and equity while further advancing the global open-source AI movement.
