December 6, 2024, Las Vegas, Nevada—The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) is advancing defense innovation through a first-of-its-kind partnership with Google Cloud. This partnership matches the most advanced artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies with AFRL research in various fields, including bioinformatics, lab management, and human performance optimization.
For instance, the bioinformatics division within AFRL managed to overcome data bottlenecks through the use of Google Cloud infrastructures for automated data pipelines and enhanced research efficiency. The development of specific custom web apps in Google App Engine simplifies automated scheduling and administration of lab resource usage. Finally, the FOCUS Mission Readiness App captures AI analytics and data from wearables to improve the performance and wellness of Airmen.
In this way, through tools such as Vertex AI and Jupyter Notebooks, AFRL creates flexible environments for researchers to promote quick development and testing of AI models.
“Cloud capabilities and AI/ML tools provide a flexible and adaptable environment that empowers our researchers to rapidly prototype and deploy innovative solutions. It’s like having a toolbox filled with powerful AI building blocks that can be combined to tackle our unique research challenges,” said Dr. Dan Berrigan, AFRL’s Worldwide Digital Collaboration Lead.
This partnership is an example of the impact of cloud and AI technology solutions in carrying out government research, sustaining the U.S. Air Force at the forefront of technological innovations.
