Machine Learning Powers Next Leap in Circular RNA Gene Therapy

OSLO, Norway, October 24, 2024 – Circio Holding ASA has showcased new results illustrating how artificial intelligence is changing the evolution of gene therapies. At the annual meeting of the European Society of Cell and Gene Therapy (ESGCT), the company presented an AI-optimized circVec platform demonstrating machine learning’s powerful capabilities in the field of biotechnology.

Dr. Thomas B. Hansen, CTO of Circio, emphasizes the role of AI in their breakthrough:

“circVec’s success demonstrates how machine learning optimization can revolutionize gene therapy development. The AI-driven approach has enabled us to achieve expression levels previously thought impossible with traditional methods.

The presentation also showed how machine learning algorithms played an instrumental role in the development of the next generation of circVec 2.2, which utilized codon optimization via artificial intelligence and achieved 2-4 fold increases in protein yield. This is after the 15-fold increase in reporter signals evidenced by circVec 2.1 in vivo studies in mouse models.

The company’s application of AI to optimize biologically relevant codons in a gene for protein expression is quite revolutionary in the capacity that it changes the paradigm of how gene therapies are designed. This strategy of machine learning has not only resulted in improvement in protein expression but also enhancement of the durability and efficiency of the platform.

This advancement represents a critical step in the intersection of artificial intelligence and gene therapy, illustrating the capability of artificial intelligence to enhance therapeutic development. Working towards that goal, Circio is actively developing its own AI technology and is in the process of piloting the platform across a variety of tissues and disease indications.
