Anthropic Hits $61.5B Valuation After $3.5B Funding Round

Anthropic, the AI startup backed by Amazon, has secured a $3.5 billion funding round, which brings its total valuation to an impressive $61.5 billion.

The investment round, led by Lightspeed Venture Partners, saw participation from major players including Salesforce Ventures, Cisco Investments, and Fidelity Management & Research Co.

Anthropic is best known for its AI chatbot ‘Claude’, which has quickly gained traction alongside OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. Numerous businesses across industries are integrating Claude into their operations.

Anthropic Will Use Capital to Accelerate AI Development

According to the Anthropic blog post, the fresh capital will be used to expand computing capacity, enhance AI safety research, and accelerate international growth in Asia and Europe. The company has also achieved a great milestone in AI alignment and interpretability, which is crucial for developing safe and scalable AI systems.

Anthropic’s financial growth has been equally remarkable. In December, the company’s annualized revenue hit $1 billion, a tenfold increase from the previous year. Its enterprise clientele includes startups like Cursor and Replit, as well as global giants like Zoom, Pfizer, and Thomson Reuters. Additionally, Anthropic’s AI now powers Amazon’s upgraded Alexa+ service, extending Claude’s reach to millions of households.

Amazon, a key investor, has poured a total of $8 billion into Anthropic, with AWS serving as the startup’s primary cloud partner. Meanwhile, Google has also deepened its ties, investing over $3 billion and securing a 10% stake in the company.
