Apple has officially partnered with Alibaba to introduce AI-powered features on iPhones in China. The announcement was confirmed by Alibaba Chairman Joe Tsai at the World Governments Summit in Dubai, as reported by a prominent media outlet.
Apple Expands Its AI Capabilities
“Apple talked to a number of companies in China, and in the end, they chose to do business with us. They want to use our AI to power their phones,” Tsai stated.
While Apple Intelligence, the company’s AI-driven features, has been rolled out in multiple regions, it remains unavailable in China. The country imposes strict regulations on AI, which requires large language models to obtain government approval before commercial development. Generative AI providers must also ensure content compliance with China’s legal framework.
By collaborating with Alibaba, Apple aims to adapt its AI technology to meet regulatory requirements while leveraging Alibaba’s expertise in China’s tech ecosystem. Alibaba has developed its own large language models and voice assistant.
Amid the AI boom, Apple has taken different initiatives, including a partnership with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into iPhones. CEO Tim Cook recently announced that Apple Intelligence features are set to roll out in multiple regions by April.
The partnership with Alibaba could open the door for Apple to expand its AI expertise in a country like China, which ensures compliance while maintaining a competitive edge in the rapidly growing market.
