How Will AWS-driven GenAI Gateway Help BT Group Scale AI?
  • Digital Unit, the digital transformation division of the British telecommunications leader BT Group, launched the GenAI Gateway platform to empower enterprise AI adoption with enhanced security and scale. The GenAI enablement solution will allow businesses to harness the power of large language models (LLMs) while mitigating their risks and biases.
  • The platform, powered by Amazon Web Services provides access to large language models from AI leaders like Anthropic, Meta, Cohere, Stability AI and others to help enterprises embed generative AI into their workflows from a secure, consolidated platform.

The GenAI Gateway, an innovative internal platform developed by BT Group’s Digital Unit, in partnership with Amazon Web Services, leverages the capabilities of large language models (LLMs) from leading providers such as Anthropic, Meta, Cohere and Amazon. The platform makes use of Amazon SageMaker and Amazon Bedrock, allowing private API access to a variety of LLMs and NLP models. It is critical to BT Group’s plan to integrate AI into all aspects of its business operations to improve scalability, cost-effectiveness and enterprise security.

Internal projects benefit from the ad hoc use of LLMs, but scaling it requires high costs, robust security, and performance monitoring. These issues are addressed by GenAI Gateway, which offers centralized private access, tracks LLM performance for issues like model deterioration or hallucinations, and even reduces the risk of vendor lock-in with a diverse set of providers. With the GenAI enablement platform’s ability to track budgets by application, developers can choose the optimal model for each use case, which simplifies optimization and reduces expenses for businesses looking to scale their GenAI deployments.

GenAI Gateway, which is hosted by AWS, is accessible through secure APIs, helping it integrate with the modular digital architecture of BT Group. The platform will be a key enabler in BT Group’s transition to an “AI-enabled” business, as it will integrate with the enterprise’s data fabric platform to better manage, leverage and govern its data-driven workflows. Among the beta use cases of the platform is Openreach, using GenAI Gateway to summarize its engineering notes on Ethernet and full fibre jobs. Another notable use case is BT Group adopting it across contract analysis, legal and procurement teams.

AWS’s General Manager for EMEA Telco, Fabio Cerone, commended the platform for accelerating the implementation of generative AI with embedded security. He further stated, “The GenAI Gateway will trigger the flywheel effect in the adoption of generative AI, delivering quicker results for BT Group and its customers.” The Managing Director of Data & AI at BT Group, Deepika Adusumilli, also highlighted the revolutionary potential of GenAI Gateway, saying it enables AI adoption across the organization in a “safe, responsible, flexible and scalable” way.

The GenAI Gateway platform demonstrates the power of strategic partnerships in the modern business landscape and how AI can be securely and efficiently scaled across enterprise operations. By offering LLMs from leading providers, such as Anthropic, Cohere, Meta, Mistral AI, Stability AI, etc., through a single API, the platform will bring high-performance generative AI models to businesses at a low cost. With the global market size of generative AI in the telecom industry estimated to be valued at $4.8 billion by 2032, BT Group’s launch of GenAI Gateway will position it as an innovative, forward-thinking telecom leader in the years to come.
