ChatGPT Faces Hours-Long Outage With ‘Bad Gateway Error’

OpenAI’s artificial intelligence chatbot, ChatGPT, suffered a widespread outage on Wednesday, leaving millions of users unable to access the platform for several hours. The issue, which began around 11:00 GMT, persisted until late Wednesday night.

However, the issue was fixed a few hours ago when OpenAI released a statement about the error.

ChatGPT Users Face ‘Bad Gateway Error’

The issue caused great disruption for businesses, AI startups, and IT professionals who rely on the tool for their daily operations. Users attempting to access ChatGPT were met with a “Bad Gateway Error” message on their screen.

Downdetector, a website that tracks online outages, recorded over 10,000 reports of the chatbot being inaccessible from different parts of the world, including India, UK, and others.

OpenAI addressed the issue ChatGPT’s users were experiencing by sharing an update on its status page. “ChatGPT and some of our APIs had error rates earlier due to an issue with our provider. We’ve issued a fix and should be fully recovered soon. Thanks for your patience!” the company stated.

According to the report, the resolution was officially updated at 15:09 GMT. However, OpenAI has not publicly disclosed the real cause of the outage yet.

The downtime came just days after OpenAI introduced new services, becoming a hotbed for discussion. Some people speculate that the technical failure may have been linked to recent updates or increased traffic.

Since its launch in November 2022, ChatGPT has become a cornerstone of generative AI. Now, It boasts over 300 million weekly users as of December 2024. OpenAI continues to expand its AI infrastructure, with tech firms recently pledging a $500 billion investment in AI development within the US.

The outage also comes after tech mogul, Elon Musk slammed OpenAI’s founder, Sam Altman for his past tweets, in which he opposed Donald Trump’s presidency.

Elon Musk sparked a battle with Sam Altman over the Stargate artificial intelligence infrastructure project inaugurated by President Donald Trump, which started on OpenAI’s board.
