Chinese automaker Chery’s R&D robotics division, Aimoga, has partnered with DeepSeek, a buzzing AI model to develop affordable humanoid robots.
While DeepSeek’s new models rival ChatGPT-4o, their key advantage is its affordability. Unlike OpenAI, which required billions in funding to sustain innovation, DeepSeek has developed its AI on fewer GPUs, making it incredibly more power-efficient and cost-effective.
Chery Integrates AI for Smart Cockpits and Humanoid Robots
The automaker has been integrating AI technology for over a decade. The automaker collaborated with Baidu as early as 2010 and launched its proprietary CheryLion AI platform in 2018. In 2020, it began researching humanoid robots, which led to the launch of Aimoga in 2023. This subsidiary focuses on both humanoid and robotic canines.
Now, Chery is integrating DeepSeek’s AI models into Aimoga’s voice interaction systems and potentially into its CheryLion AI-based smart cockpits. Amid the meteoric rise in the AI sector, Chinese brands increasingly prefer homegrown AI solutions over Western alternatives.
While AI has rapidly grown in the last few years, robotics hardware has struggled to keep up. But, with AI models like DeepSeek improving affordability and efficiency, the robotics sector may soon see a favorable shift. Chery and Aimoga are among the top companies pushing for humanoid robots as practical consumer products.
Aimoga’s robots already use DeepSeek’s V1, V2, and R1 models. The division began mass production last year and plans to launch its first retail robots within the next few months. While the pricing details remain undisclosed, if DeepSeek’s cost-effectiveness translates into Aimoga’s final products, the market might see its first wave of affordable, AI-powered humanoid robots sooner than expected.
