China’s PLA Uses DeepSeek For Non-Combat Military Purposes

As the AI race around the globe has intensified, China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has begun integrating DeepSeek into its operations for non-combat applications, including military hospitals and paramilitary units.

According to the report by the South China Morning Post, DeepSeek’s large language models (LLMs) have been deployed across PLA hospitals, including the prestigious PLA General Hospital in Beijing (popularly known as 301 Hospital), where high-ranking officials and military personnel receive treatment.

The PLA Central Theatre Command’s general hospital recently announced the “embedded deployment” of  DeepSeek’s R1-70 LLM, which highlights its ability to suggest treatment plans while maintaining strict patient data security.

Data from these applications is stored on secure local servers to prevent possible breaches to protect sensitive and crucial information. However, PLA leadership warned about over-reliance on AI in combat situations. A recent article in People’s Liberation Army Daily stressed that AI should serve as a guiding tool, which enhances human decision-making rather than replacing it.

While AI brings operational efficiency, it lacks the nuanced self-awareness necessary for high-stakes battlefield scenarios. The article highlighted that AI must complement human judgment, which ensures accountability and adaptability in mission-critical environments.

DeepSeek’s rise has not gone unnoticed globally. The tool, which surpassed ChatGPT to become the top-ranked free app on Apple’s App Store, delivers impressive performance while consuming significantly less computing power.

As the US tech industry, which has invested billions into AI, watches with astonishment, China is swiftly deploying AI to transform multiple sectors; from healthcare and manufacturing to urban development.

Some units of the People’s Armed Police (PAP), under the Military Commission, have already introduced DeepSeek for daily physical training and psychological counseling. Soldiers have used AI to address anxiety and develop personalized exercise regimens.
