DeepSeek to Open-Source AGI Research Amid Privacy Concerns

The buzzing Chinese AI model DeepSeek has announced plans to open-source five key repositories starting next week. The announcement fully discloses the company’s sincere progress, which aligns with its ambitions to achieve artificial general intelligence (AGI).

DeepSeek Rolls Out AGI Amid Privacy Concerns

In a tweet today, the company writes: “We’re a tiny team DeepSeek exploring AGI. Starting next week, we’ll be open-sourcing 5 repos, sharing our small but sincere progress with full transparency.”

These repositories, described as “documented, deployed, and battle-tested in production,” will work as foundational components of DeepSeek’s AI services. By rolling out its tool publicly, the company aims to expand its collaboration and contribute to the wider AI research community.

“As part of the open-source community, we believe that every line shared becomes collective momentum that accelerates the journey. No ivory towers – just pure garage-energy and community-driven innovation,” DeepSeek added.

While the launch has been welcomed by open-source supporters, it also raises questions about DeepSeek’s rapid emergence and the potential risks associated with its technology. The startup has positioned itself as an alternative to established AI giants like OpenAI and Google with incredible AI capabilities for free. However, its meteoric rise has sparked concerns about data security and privacy.

US lawmakers are now planning to impose a ban on DeepSeek following reports that the company’s app transfers user data to a state-owned entity currently under international sanctions. Additionally, Microsoft and OpenAI have also launched their independent investigations into a reported breach of proprietary AI tools by a group linked to DeepSeek.

The move to open-source its technology rolls out strategically times to counter mounting criticism and reassure skeptics. Open sourcing has long been famous as a means to democratize technology and enhance transparency.
