92% of Indian Executives Cite Security Risks as AI’s Biggest Obstacle: Deloitte Report

Mumbai, 17 December 2024 – AI at a Crossroads: Building Trust as the Path to Scale, a new report by Deloitte Asia Pacific, discloses that security vulnerabilities, such as hacking and cyber threats, are the biggest prohibitive factors around AI adoption for 92% of Indian executives. While privacy is a concern for 91% of respondents, 89% point to regulatory uncertainties as major stumbling blocks.

The need for immediate security frameworks, privacy safeguards, and regulations as enablers for safe, responsible AI adoption can not be ignored. This report, apart from surveying senior leaders across Asia Pacific, also states that fewer than 10% of organizations have governance structures in place for trusted AI.

Jayant Saran, Partner, Deloitte India, emphasized, “For Indian organisations, the imperative must be to integrate AI seamlessly into existing systems, addressing both technical and knowledge gaps to ensure sustainable adoption. The encouraging focus on workforce readiness reflects a critical step forward, but the journey requires continuous upskilling and cross-functional collaboration.”

In the surveyed organizations, 60% of the workforce has skills for ethical uses of AI, while 72% of companies are actively on the hunt for talent to close AI-related skill gaps.

Dr. Elea Wurth, Lead Partner Trustworthy AI Strategy, Deloitte Asia Pacific, added, “Effective AI governance is not just a compliance issue; it is crucial for realising the full potential of AI technologies. Our findings reveal that organisations with robust governance frameworks are better equipped to manage risks and experience greater trust in their AI outputs, increased operational efficiency and greater value and scale.”

Fortunately, 63% of Indian executives stated that effective AI governance would enhance trust in AI outputs, and 60% maintained that it would boost the reputation of the organization while 57% believed that trust would drive an increase in AI adoption.
