November 4, 2024 – Colombo, Sri Lanka-Dialog Axiata, the leading telecommunication operator in Sri Lanka, launched the world’s first commercial virtual Base Station Controller (vBSC) with Ericsson. This is one of the most remarkable innovations in network efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
The deployment of the vBSC significantly increases Dialog Axiata’s operational capabilities and network resiliency, making it less encumbered by physical limitations and more scalable.
The vBSC technology is a game changer in the way networks are built and managed by making use of virtualization for the Base Station Controller which is a key component in GSM networks that also bridges crucial communication nodes and the IoT ecosystem. vBSC does not use hardware-based controllers rather, it is an automated software program operating in a virtualized environment which is a very flexible and cost-effective practice.
All generations of mobile networks could use vBSC technology which means Dialog Axiata’s systems are precious and can be adapted to all future physical security and digital infrastructure devices.
“Ericsson’s virtual Base Station Controller deployment has the potential to revolutionize the telecommunications industry in Sri Lanka by offering an affordable and efficient approach for modernizing networks while drastically lowering operational costs”
David Hägerbro, Head of Ericsson Malaysia, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh remarked.
From this installation, Dialog Axiata aims to make tremendous cuts in power and real estate while supporting environmental affirmative action and furthering operational sustainability through alignment to SDGs.
Dialog Axiata’s Group Chief Technology Officer, Ranga Kariyawasam while hailing the achievement stated,
“As the world’s first commercial implementation of vBSC, this achievement has further demonstrated without doubt, Dialog Axiata’s position as a pioneer in the telecommunication industry and its continued efforts in providing transformational network solutions that are future proof.”
This deployment also highlights the global leadership of Dialog Axiata in advancing technological solutions as it provides a leading model for other telecommunications operators across the globe to consider adopting a virtualized infrastructure model to enhance efficiency as well as modernization.
