Zurich – Edisun Power has decided to bring its 941 MWp solar plant “Fuencarral” located close to Madrid into alignment with the renewables use of AI-powered data centers. The strategy forms part of addressing the increasing energy demand from the applications of such AI-powered tools and rather stringent European laws like the European Energy Efficiency Directive (EED) that demands low emission operations at data centers.
The Fuencarral project is a complex of three solar plants and enjoys the benefits of grid access rights, environmental and administrative permits and construction authorization. Edisun has also obtained added development rights from Smartenergy for energy supply alignment for AI, including securing more grid connections. Edisun thereby sells its overall Italian project portfolio of 159 MWp to Smartenergy as a consideration.
Edisun is now looking for investments in the financing of Fuencarral plant construction from infrastructure funds, private equity, and datacenter operators. At the same time, some talks are going on with banks looking for financial partnerships. Smartenergy will repurchase the project if Edisun fails to obtain financing, thus securing shareholder interests to some extent.
The Fuencarral solar plant thus positions Edisun as a key player right at the intersection between renewable energy and artificial intelligence, tackling critical environmental and technological issues. Information on these deals will be available in the annual report of Edisun on March 28, 2025.
