Election Commission of India Mandates Labelling of AI-Generated Content in Campaigns

The Indian Election Commission of India has recently taken one step toward ethical use of the technology for electoral processes in India. According to the advisory, any content that has been either fully or partly produced by artificial intelligence or has been edited through digital techniques like images, videos, or audios should state that it has been ‘AI-Generated,’ ‘Digitally Enhanced,’ or ‘Synthetic Content.’ This labeling is essential to enable consumers to differentiate the content generated by AI technology. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has also been concerned with the lack of regulation on advertisements especially those on social media networks. It has insisted that all such materials should display notices that reveal the use of such contents.

This project seeks to encourage the application of AI in independent political campaigns but also tries to balance the use of new technologies. The ECI’s actions are in compliance with global benchmarks and seek to make India a pioneer in the use of AI in democracy. It is anticipated that this step is likely to enhance confidence among the voters owing to informed voting and absolute electoral standards.

The advisory also notes that the ECI would continue to safeguard elections from possible interference.
