Santa Clara, California, November 8, 2024 – At Ericsson’s D-15 Innovation Center in Silicon Valley, executives and other stakeholders discussed the development of open networks, programmable APIs, and artificial intelligence. Alongside top executives from Meta and Google, as well as several telecommunications operators like Intel, T-Mobile, Verizon, and Ericsson it focused on innovation through open programmable networks designed specifically for enterprises.
Fredrik Jejdling, Head of Ericsson Networks, shared Ericsson’s vision, “The advancements we’ve made in 5G technology, and now with the introduction of programmable networks, position us at the forefront of innovation. The opportunity is there for Ericsson to adapt and lead the industry. And we will do this together with our partners.”
As highlighted by Ericsson’s Chief Technology Officer Erik Ekudden, network differentiation, and API-enabled integration is key, as he envisions fresh revenue streams and higher level of network capabilities that will change how mobile communication is experienced.
“Networks are innovative, investable, and open for business. We view network differentiation as the next wave in mobile. To take full advantage of this means we must change the way we work, especially within partner ecosystems. The pieces of the puzzle are coming together.”
Technology specialists and analysts discussed the introduction of rApps focused on automation, open RAN, and the transformative role of API access across applications. Niklas Heuveldop, the CEO of Vonage, highlighted that the API-based model can generate about $30 billion in value as developers leverage edge, wireless, and AI capabilities to build next-gen solutions.
“We need to bring frontrunner use cases to the forefront and get developers excited. Developers are starting to pay attention to wireless networks and the intersection of artificial intelligence, augmented reality, edge compute, and 5G, among other things. The job for us at Vonage – as well as other parties – is to make this very easy for developers to consume.”
The D15 center which is named after the very first workshop built by Ericsson in Stockholm is a center of excellence where various activities are undertaken including work on VR, cloud RAN, and enterprise connectivity.
