Ericsson Advances O2 Interface Standardization with Industry Partners

Stockholm, Sweden – Ericsson declares once more as an Open RAN leader in bringing forward the industrialization of the O2 interface in partnership with Dell Technologies and Red Hat. Developed within O-RAN Alliance, the O2 interface is an enabler for seamless multi-vendor cloud RAN integration that is increasingly supporting the demand for an open telecom network.

According to proof-of-concept trials in progress with Dell and Red Hat, implementation of the O2 interface is to be documented. The integration of the Dell Telecom Infrastructure Blocks and Automation Suite with Red Hat OpenShift will then connect the platform to Ericsson’s Intelligent Automation Platform (EIAP) by means of the O2-IMS interface. The outcome of this collaboration shall be shown at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2025 in Barcelona.

Anders Vestergren, Head of Solution Area Network Management, Ericsson says: “The future of telecom networks lies in openness and interoperability. The O2 interface, as set out by the O-RAN Alliance, is a vital element for empowering CSPs with the flexibility that they need to deliver the multi-vendor, open, innovative and programmable networks they have planned. With numerous vendors in the mix in all areas of the network, consistency and standardization becomes crucial. It’s essential that the industry works together to deliver components aligned with Open RAN so interfaces like O2 can prove their value. Ericsson already has a strong collaboration with Red Hat and Dell in this particular area and looks forward to working with others to further drive industry adoption.”

The O2 interface standardizes the interaction of RAN management platforms and O-Cloud infrastructure and enables the seamless deployment and management of cloud RAN networks. It consists of two components: the O2 Infrastructure Management Service, meant for resource monitoring and lifecycle management, and the O2 Deployment Management Service management of Open RAN function management. Each of these models ensures interoperability in various multi-vendor environments efficiently.

Honoré LaBourdette, Vice President of the Global Telco Ecosystem at Red Hat, says: “By proactively aligning to O-Cloud standards, this collaboration empowers CSPs to make the strongest possible strategic choices when it comes to the platforms they deploy to power their networks. The alignment with the O2 interface, and Red Hat OpenShift, offers a harmonized approach to infrastructure management across all vendors in a network on a common platform, ultimately leading to a more efficient, adaptable, and reliable system for enhanced performance and improved experiences for the CSP and its customers.”

Ericsson added the O2 interface to its portfolio together with Cloud RAN and Cloud Native Infrastructure Solution (CNIS). The Intelligent Automation Platform actively supports native O2, thus allowing transparency in integrating with Ericsson Orchestrator Lifecycle Manager EO-LM towards network optimization.

Andrew Vaz, Vice President, Product Management, Telecom Systems Business at Dell Technologies says: “Open and standardized interfaces will accelerate the integration of emerging technologies into telecom networks, driving faster innovation across the industry. Dell PowerEdge XR8000 servers and Dell Telecom Infrastructure Automation Software, combined with Ericsson and Red Hat technologies, will offer communications service providers simpler and more efficient ways to manage cloud RAN networks, all aligned with O-RAN specifications.”

The announcement follows a major milestone by the company in integrating multiple RAN system vendors with its EIAP via the O1 interface. This collaboration reinforces the company’s commitment to open, interoperable telco networks.

Attendees at MWC 2025 will be able to see these advancements at Ericsson (booth #3M10) and Dell booths.
