Facebook’s Targeted Advertising Faces New Restrictions Under EU Ruling

EU Court Ruling Redefines Facebook’s Data Collection Practices

Brussels, Belgium-October 4, 2024-A recent European Court ruling has imposed new limits on Facebook’s use of personal data for targeted advertising. However, the court did rule that the social media company could not process the users’ data indiscriminately – without ‘time-frames’ or different data types – due to reasons of privacy and user consent.

The aforementioned ruling had to do with a complaint filed by NOYB (None of Your Business), an organization headed by Max Schrems. The court found out that Facebook’s sweeping collection and exploitation of individual’s information without their consent was unlawful under the EU Charter on Data Protection.

Skinny evisceration as aspired by Schrems suggests that there are earth-shaking implications created for the revolving around personal details there is use in the advertisement.

“This decision is a major victory for consumer privacy. It sends a strong message to tech companies that they can’t abuse user data under the guise of consent,”
Said Max Schrems, the NOYB Founder, and a Data Privacy Advocate.

Weakened antitrust provisions on abuse of dominance like the one provided by Republic v. Facebook will likely see much debate on continued reform of the competition framework in place in particular about digital markets.

Facebook has yet to comment on the ruling but is expected to face significant changes in its advertising strategy across the EU.

Regulators stressed the importance of limiting the time period for which user data can be retained and processing data only as necessary for specific purposes.

This decision could also prompt similar cases against other platforms using broad data collection for marketing.

The court’s ruling reinforces the EU’s commitment to upholding stringent data privacy standards and is expected to reshape the online advertising landscape in Europe.

Further details on how this ruling will be implemented and monitored are expected to emerge in the coming weeks.
