Open Source Initiative Unveils Landmark AI Definition at All Things Open 2024

RALEIGH, N.C., October 28, 2024 – The Open Source Initiative (OSI) has reached a landmark occasion in AI development with the unveiling of the first-ever Open Source AI Definition (OSAID v1.0) at All Things Open 2024, establishing comprehensive standards for validating open source AI systems.

This model has been introduced after years of scientific research and global collaboration to establish clear criteria for determining whether an AI system can be classified as truly open source or not. The definition comes as a crucial step toward greater transparency and standardization in artificial intelligence development.

“The co-design process that led to version 1.0 of the Open Source AI Definition was well-developed, thorough, inclusive, and fair,” stated Carlo Piana, OSI board chair.

“The board is confident that the process has resulted in a definition that meets the standards of Open Source.”

The new definition stipulates stringent standards for AI systems, especially regarding the sources of data used to train them.

“The new definition requires Open Source models to provide enough information about their training data so that a skilled person can recreate a substantially equivalent system,” explained Ayah Bdeir, Mozilla’s AI strategy lead.

“Transparency is at the core of EleutherAI’s non-profit mission,” added Stella Biderman, executive director at the EleutherAI Institute.

“The Open Source AI Definition is a necessary step towards promoting the benefits of Open Source principles in the field of AI.”

Finalization of OSAID v1.0 took several years of research, numerous international workshops, and year-long co-design work. Aiming at both ‘openness’ and practicality, this framework sets the highest bar that has ever been achieved in AI development.

The movement has received backing from the industry’s key players, while the Digital Public Goods Alliance (DPGA) declared it would include the standards in its Digital Public Goods Standard. OSAID version 1.0 and its support are posted on the OSI website, and this offers a new era in open-source AI development.
