November 27, 2024 – Google opened the London AI Campus today, which is a significant stride towards advancing AI literacy and education in the UK. The campus located in Somers Town, Camden is an educational pilot program for a period of two years jointly developed with Camden Council and Camden Learning. The initiative aims at making local sixth-form students understand and learn artificial intelligence (AI), highly emphasizing diversity and inclusion.
The first cohort comprises 32 students who reflect Camden’s diverse post-16 community with preference given to those from underrepresented groups, including students eligible for free school meals. We equip students with the current cutting-edge AI technology, real-world project experience-as well as mentorship from industry leaders, including experts from Google DeepMind.
Beyond Camden, Google.org announced an £865,000 grant to broaden the Experience AI program, conjured with the Raspberry Pi Foundation. This initiative is set to train teachers and reach 250,000 more students across the UK by the year 2026.
UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer expressed that the initiative would help make the UK more competitive on a global scale while realizing potentially life-changing scientific breakthroughs. Debbie Weinstein, Vice President of Google and Managing Director of Google UK & Ireland, emphasized Google’s long-term commitment to digital skills, having already trained over one million individuals and businesses across the UK.
