November 27, 2024 – The latest addition from Google in their collection of games is a chess match with a twist: players can now use generative AI to create their own chess pieces. Developed using Imagen 3, an AI model by Google, the game lets players enter prompts describing their desired pieces, generating customized sets for every match. For example, someone requesting pieces for white to be “geometric sci-fi art” will generate opposite pieces black to be “fantasy-themed”.
While visual customization is something new, the gameplay remains minimal with only three levels of difficulty and two time controls. Though the isometric board view is very appealing, it may cause problems to the conventional players, but a top-down view is available in settings.
The launch coincides with the 2024 World Chess Championship in which reigning champion Ding Liren goes against 18-year-old Gukesh Dommaraju. With the main sponsors of the said event, Google officially announced the new in-house chess bot to be delivered under the Gemini AI platform. The bot will allow users to play by typing moves, which will go live starting December for Gemini Advanced subscribers.
The game aptly represents another one of Google’s “moves” into chess technology, with commercial as well as AI-enhanced options for enthusiasts.
