Sunnyvale, California, United States – 17th October 2024 – Technology giant Google Cloud introduces Vertex AI Search for Healthcare and a renewed Healthcare Data Engine for global customers. The move aims to simplify administrative workloads for healthcare professionals while improving patient care using generative AI.
The Vertex AI for Healthcare empowers healthcare professionals to quickly find critical data from complex medical records and documents with intricate medical vocabulary and abbreviations. The solution integrates Gemini 1.5 Flash and MedLM, Google’s medical LLM, to generate precise answers by citing and linking back to the original sources.
Another key announcement was the global availability of the Healthcare Data Engine (HDE) through its Healthcare API. The solution allows medical organizations to store patient data in interoperable, longitudinal records using the FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) format. The updated version includes pay-as-you-go pricing models, enhanced service management and a new data mapping tool called Data Mapper.
The move to launch these solutions was based on a survey by Google Cloud and The Harris Poll that outlined key challenges in the healthcare industry. Some of the findings showed that administrative work, such as documentation, scheduling, billing and inventory management takes up a huge chunk of time.
Clinicians spent 28 hours/week and medical staff up to 34 hours/week on admin work. The claims staff spent 36 hours/week on administrative duties, leading to burnout and ineffective operations. The survey also reported that 80% of healthcare providers believe administrative duties detract from patient care.
Google Cloud’s innovative solutions will help in tackling this challenge, with Lisa O’Malley, senior director of Cloud AI Applications at Google Cloud saying,
“The administrative burden on healthcare workers is immense, taking precious time away from what matters most: patient care. With the general availability of Vertex AI Search for Healthcare and new features in Healthcare Data Engine, we’re providing powerful tools for our customers to build a strong data foundation and harness the power of generative AI to create more efficient and effective healthcare systems.”
Leading healthcare providers, such as Hackensack Meridian Health, MEDITECH and Community Health Systems, believe that leveraging these Google Cloud tools will enhance personalized and proactive healthcare outcomes. Google Cloud’s innovative healthcare tools, Vertex AI Search for Healthcare and Healthcare Data Engine, will be pivotal in reducing administrative workloads and enhancing patient care.
