The leading tech giant, Google has launched a free AI-powered coding assistant ‘Gemini Code Assist’ powered by Gemini 2.0 for individuals, including students, freelancers, hobbyists, and startups.
The new tool supports all public domain programming languages and provides advanced AI-assisted code generation, debugging, and reviews. It will bridge the gap between tech teams and independent developers.
Unlike other free coding assistants with restrictive limits, Gemini Code Assist will offer up to 180,000 code completions per month. The AI tool can generate, explain, and improve code using natural language prompts, allowing developers to build applications efficiently.
Developers can use it in Visual Studio Code, JetBrains IDEs, Firebase, and Android Studio for smooth integration into their workflow.
In addition to coding assistance, Google is introducing Gemini Code Assist for GitHub, which provides free AI-powered code reviews for both public and private repositories.
In the announcement, the company states “With Gemini Code Assist for GitHub, developers get a powerful helping hand that can detect stylistic issues and bugs and automatically suggest code changes and fixes. Offloading basic reviews to an AI agent can help make code repositories more maintainable and improve quality, allowing developers to focus on more complex tasks. It’s available directly in GitHub, where most open-source developers post and review code, via a GitHub app.”
The tool provides customizable feedback, detects bugs and stylistic issues, and can follow custom team guidelines via a .gemini/styleguide.md file in their repository. It streamlines the review process, allowing developers to focus on more complex tasks while the AI handles repetitive steps.
