Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis has downplayed concerns about China DeepSeek’s meteoric rise, claiming that Google’s artificial intelligence models are “more efficient” and “more performant” models than its competitor.
While speaking at an all-hands meeting in Paris, Hassabis reassured employees that Google has “all the ingredients” to hold its dominance in the AI sector.
Google DeepMind CEO Refutes DeepSeek’s Claim
DeepSeek, a Chinese AI startup, gained global attention when its chatbot overtook OpenAI’s ChatGPT in Apple’s App Store rankings. The company also claimed its AI model was trained at a fraction of the cost of leading competitors.
However, Hassabis challenged these claims, suggesting that DeepSeek’s reported costs might not reflect the actual resources used.
“When you look into the details, some of DeepSeek’s claims are exaggerated,” Hassabis stated. He added that the Chinese startup likely relied on Western AI advancements and more hardware than publicly disclosed.
Despite his skepticism, Hassabis praised DeepSeek’s technical capabilities, calling it “the best AI team to come out of China.” On the flip side, He also pointed to the geopolitical and security concerns around the company. For instance, many agencies in U.S. and globally have restricted the use of DeepSeek’s AI tools.
During the meeting, some employees also questioned Google’s revised AI principles, which removed previous commitments against using AI for weaponry or surveillance.
Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai and Google’s President of Global Affairs, Kent Walker justified the changes by highlighting the changing dynamics of AI applications.
