HEIDELBERG Revolutionizes Printing Industry with AI-Controlled Autonomous Systems

Heidelberg, Germany, November 4, 2024 – HEIDELBERG, a leader in printing technology, recently shared its vision for AI-enabled print shops that can operate autonomously, which is a major advancement in manufacturing automation.

“What began 20 years ago at HEIDELBERG with the connection of the first printing press to the Internet has opened up unimagined technical possibilities,” stated Dr. David Schmedding, Chief Technology and Sales Officer at HEIDELBERG.

“Today we are planning the AI-controlled print shop of tomorrow, which can run shifts autonomously at comparatively low cost. And HEIDELBERG will provide important building blocks for this with software, machines and robotics.

The company’s creative strategy is supported by its developed digital ecosystem comprising 13,000 devices across the globe linked to the HEIDELBERG Cloud. It enables such sophisticated capabilities as intelligent assistance systems, over-the-air software updates, and automated printing on Speedmaster models.

As evidenced by the company’s ‘digital evolution’ strategy in recent years, HEIDELBERG has made significant related investments in data-driven technologies and robotics, emphasizing the digital transformation of its operations within the last two decades. AI-enabled solutions are already in use, such as the “PAT” consulting tool, which offers efficiency recommendations to contract printers.

Prinect Touch Free, an AI-based workflow application, is one of the key products that is set to be launched in the near future. This cloud application will autonomously determine optimal printing processes as well as calculate efficient layout configurations, representing a significant step toward fully automated print operations.

“HEIDELBERG is well equipped for the future and is currently benefiting from a high order backlog following the drupa printing press trade fair,” Dr. Schmedding noted, demonstrating the company’s ability to position itself as a total solution provider for the full spectrum of modern printing techniques and applications, ranging from all types of toners, to inkjet, offset, and flexographic processes.

The digital transformation of the company is also associated with the introduction of such innovative business models as subscription services based on the customer’s actual usage of the service, supported by the ability to control and manage the entire digital workflow.
