Reykjavík, November 7, 2024 – atNorth, which is the leading Nordic high-performance and artificial intelligence service provider, has reported significant developments in two of its Icelandic data centers. The ICE02 facility situated near Keflavík is expected to add 35MW while the newly developed ICE03 facility in Akureyri will add 16MW on account of the rising demand for data from local and international markets. Both expansions are scheduled for completion by mid-2025, and reflect Iceland’s position as a sustainable data center hub due to its colder temperatures and plenty of renewable energy sources.
These facilities are aimed at high-end computing, especially AI, and maintain a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of 1.2 and incorporate cutting-edge cooling systems to enhance their effectiveness. The infrastructure provided by atNorth in Iceland for hyperscale and computing operations is already employed by companies such as Crusoe, BNP Paribas, and Opera.
To fulfill its sustainability objectives, atNorth has collaborated with AgTech company Hringvarmi on a project aimed at recycling heat. This would see Hringvarmi’s Generation 1 module installed at the ICE03 facility to utilize excess heat in aiding local agricultural production.
“We are delighted to be part of atNorth’s innovative data center ecosystem. Our partnership aims to boost Iceland’s agriculture industry to lessen the need for imported produce and contribute to Iceland’s circular economy,” said Justine Vanhalst, Co-Founder of Hringvarmi. The initiative known as “data into dinner” will start with cultivating microgreens locally with producer Rækta Microfarm.
Eyjólfur Magnús Kristinsson, CEO of atNorth, highlighted the company’s commitment to sustainable expansion, saying, “We are experiencing a considerable increase in interest in our highly energy efficient, sustainable data centers. We have power agreements and building permits in place and will meet this demand as part of our ongoing sustainable expansion strategy.”
This expansion works hand in hand with atNorth’s presence in the Nordic region given that data center projects are also underway in Finland and Denmark as the company strives to satisfy the ever-growing global appetite for sustainable data centers.
