India Holds a Huge Opportunity in AI Space: Google X Founder

Google X’s founder, Sebastian Thrun has unveiled his expectations from India and highlighted India’s immense potential in the AI sector. Speaking at the Invest Karnataka 2025 Summit, Thrun stated that India has a big scope for AI-based innovation, without requiring large-scale infrastructure or extensive resources.

India Can Outsource Talent, Says Thrun

“This is your chance, India. You have the brightest people in the world because most of our CEOs in America are Indians. If you are doing something right, you export to us, like Satya Nadella (Microsoft CEO),” said Thrun during a panel discussion.

Sebastian Thrun, the pioneering force behind artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, and self-driving cars, explained his statement that AI is predominantly software-driven, which makes it highly accessible. He said, “You don’t need massive industry or huge energy resources, and you don’t have to be Germany to build this. You could start with just three or four people in a dorm or a coffee shop and invent the world.”

Thrun has played a crucial role in the development of Google Glass and Waymo for Google’s self-driving car capabilities.

To prove his point, he cited the recent example of a group of Chinese students who built a cutting-edge AI generative tool ‘DeepSeek’ that took the world by storm.

When asked about AI regulation, Thrun affirmed that the AI sector needs an investment in technological development rather than over-regulation. “When you see abuse and technology being misused against the interests of the people, legislators and regulators step in and ask how to prevent this. This works for many technologies, not just AI,” he said.

Thrun stated that there are very few exceptions. Let’s say nuclear weapons should be regulated differently. But AI is not a nuclear weapon. It is a technology that helps you create content and do research.
