Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to advocate for international regulations on Artificial Intelligence (AI) during the upcoming Action Summit in Paris. The event, co-hosted by France and India on February 10–11, will focus on the role of AI in governance, presenting both opportunities and challenges, according to officials.
India’s PM Narendra Modi to Speak on AI Regulation
The summit aims to build on previous discussions held at the Bletchley Park Summit in November 2023 and the Seoul Summit in May 2024. It will bring together representatives from approximately 30 countries and various international bodies to foster inclusive and diverse input. French officials view the summit as an avenue to advance sustainable AI practices that serve the public good. The event will concentrate on developing scientific foundations, establishing viable solutions, and setting international standards for AI.
India’s push for global AI standards has seen progress in telecommunications. The International Telecommunication Union passed a resolution supporting India’s call for standardized AI practices in the sector last year. With the rapid evolution of AI technologies, there is growing pressure to implement similar standards across other industries, as stated by officials.
The summit’s primary goals are threefold: to democratize access to secure and dependable AI technologies, promote environmentally sustainable AI, and develop a comprehensive framework for global AI governance. “AI is a domain that is fast expanding, while its use cases are evolving. At a time when many nations are trying to enter the AI race, India cannot afford to be left out of global policymaking on AI,” a telecom ministry official said.
France, as the co-host, sees the summit as an opportunity to unite global efforts toward making AI more accessible and beneficial. French officials emphasize that the event’s outcomes will be geared towards collective progress and addressing public interest concerns.
India’s Additional Agenda In The AI Space
An additional agenda for India is to secure its role in any emerging international regulatory bodies focused on AI policy. The government aims for the summit to be a stepping stone toward establishing India’s influence in shaping global AI norms.
In a strategic move following his visit to Paris, Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington, D.C. Although U.S. media outlets have reported the planned meeting, India’s Ministry of External Affairs has not yet confirmed Modi’s official travel itinerary.
Thus, the Paris summit will serve as a critical forum for discussing how to manage the ethical, social, and economic implications of AI as it becomes increasingly integrated into various aspects of life and governance. With international collaboration, the event seeks to lay the groundwork for a cohesive global approach to AI regulation.
