India hosted the second Annual India-Singapore Judicial Roundtable held on 23rd August 2024 in New Delhi, India. The annual roundtable event, inaugurated by Singapore on 9th September 2023, serves as a medium for exchanging legal knowledge and discussing mutual areas of interest to improve cooperation and collaboration between the two countries’ judiciaries.

The Honourable Chief Justice of Singapore Courts, Sundaresh Menon, said in his opening speech, “The annual Roundtable afforded us a valuable platform for discussions on topics of mutual interest, in particular, issues relating to AI and climate change. These are important and timely topics which represent some of the most critical challenges that impact all of humanity today, and which have already given rise to new and often complex legal issues that transcend jurisdictional boundaries.”

Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon led the visitor’s delegation from the Supreme Court of Singapore, with a focus on the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on legal matters and how AI-generated material calls for attribution of legal responsibility.

He also addressed the impact on the liability of companies and their directors, in the legal context of insolvency and restructuring. Singapore’s response on the matter was presented by Justice See Kee Oon.

Conclusion

The Annual India-Singapore Judicial Roundtable event underscores the joint commitment of Singapore and India to cooperate on legal attribution for artificial intelligence and its legal ramifications. With the increase in AI-generated content, addressing its legal status and ownership will be key in ensuring effective AI governance and responsible AI practices.
