Europe to Integrate Quantum Systems in HPC by 2026

Munich Germany: 16 October 2024: The EuroHPC has chosen IQM Quantum computers for supplying two of the Radiance quantum computers as part of the Euro-Q-Exa system which is headquartered at the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre LRZ in Garching Germany.

Out of these systems, a first-of-its-kind 54-qubit quantum computer system is expected to be delivered in the second half of the calendar year 2025 and later a bigger 150-qubit system is expected by the end of the calendar year 2026.

This integration into Europe’s high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure signifies a great step on the way towards the development of quantum research and computing within the region.

The cooperation will make it possible for scientists, researchers, and, industry players from various countries across Europe to take advantage of the latest generation of quantum technologies.

The systems will be versatile enough to handle everything from complex scientific problems to new industrial developments.

“It is definitely remarkable where the collaborative efforts in Europe are going towards the classical integration of quantum computing in HPC centres”

Said Dr. Jan Goetz, Co-CEO at IQM Quantum Computers. “It is gratifying to see the advanced systems put to use at specific locations like LRZ to make some new discoveries in science and promote R&D.”

The initiative Euro-Q-Exa, co-funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and Bayerische Staatsministerium für Wissenschaft und Kunst strives to go beyond the existing initiatives in the field of quantum technologies in Europe.

“High-performance quantum computing at LRZ will give researchers the ability to pursue new concepts and to answer questions which could not be resolved”

said Prof. Dr. Dieter Kranzlmüller, LRZ Director. The centrality of the LRZ’s activities signifies the position of Germany in the context of quantum innovation and also places Europe in the lead of the global race in quantum technology.
