Tokyo, November 29, 2024 – Japan Airlines and NEC Corporation have embarked on a historic trial – the NEC Baggage Counting Solution. With such an AI-powered system, it aims to optimize the management of carry-on baggage at boarding gates. The trial in Haneda Airport from April to September 2024 is the first worldwide deployment of AI for real-time analysis and categorization of carry-on baggage.
The system combines a number of cameras capturing images of passenger baggage during boarding, AI analyzing item dimensions, and classifying them into predefined categories. Real-time alerts are sent the moment it detects that an overhead storage threshold has been exceeded and can be used to take action immediately in order to avoid delays caused by congestion or last-minute transfers to cargo holds.
Excess carry-on is known to delay flights because it always causes problems in the overhead bin. Passengers will try to put their belongings in the bins above, but they cannot usually do so, delaying the boarding process. Directly tackling this issue, the AI will improve punctuality and create added convenience for customers.
With a trial result, JAL is considering various ways to implement the scheme on a commercial scale. Through NEC BluStellar consulting services, NEC offers clients fully integrated consultation and technological know-how for implementing its digital transformation services.
The approach definitely manifests the shared vision by JAL and NEC for employing digital technologies to pursue operational excellence and enhanced passenger experience.
