Meta AI’s Comment Sparks Outrage: Feels Like Black Mirror

Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta AI platform has once again attracted controversy, this time for testing an AI-powered feature that suggests comments on Instagram posts.

How Meta AI Fell Into Controversy

The controversy sparked after tech enthusiast Jonah Manzano observed that the feature allows users to generate AI-suggested comments by tapping a pencil icon next to the text bar. According to Manzano, Meta AI suggests that comments like “Great photo shoot location” or “Cute living room setup,” with users having the option to refresh for more suggestions.

The revelation has triggered outrage in the community as critics are accusing Meta of diluting authentic human interaction by flooding its platform with AI-generated “slop.” Detractors believe that Meta’s move is a ploy to inflate “engagement metrics” and boost ad revenue by creating artificial interactions.

“Meta is gonna be full of only fake bots talking to each other in the worst echo chambers ever seen to man,” said one enraged user. Another added, “They are doing it for the long-term goal of eventually being able to deceive advertisers in a way that is difficult to prove.”

The sentiment resonated across platforms, with one user likening the situation to an episode from the dystopian series Black Mirror, remarking, “Every day feels like a Black Mirror episode lately.”

This isn’t the first time the company has sparked controversy by blending AI into its services. In 2023, the company experimented with AI-based characters that had distinct profiles and personalities. The project was eventually shelved after widespread criticism, as users found the AI-generated persons “creepy” and unnecessary.

A few days back, Elon Musk’s Grok came under fire after its views on Indian politics.
