Espoo, Finland – 26 September 2024 – Nokia Bell Labs, founded by Alexander Graham Bell in 1925, announces an R&D collaboration with AI leader e& to develop responsible AI solutions for industrial automation. The move is expected to foster more sustainable, ethical and efficient enterprise-level automation across industrial applications.
The collaboration highlights e&’s commitment to achieving net zero emissions in its home market of UAE, and reducing the environmental impact from industrial sectors by leveraging responsible AI in real-world deployments. It hopes to bring its Generative AI expertise to the collaborative effort, reiterating its commitment towards the ethical responsibilities of AI innovation.
e&’s Group Chief AI and Data Officer, Dena Almansoori, emphasized,
“While we realise the immense potential of AI, it’s equally important to build strong protections to ensure its responsible development and deployment. This will be the foundation of our collaboration with Nokia Bell Labs.”
The year-long memorandum of understanding will focus on deploying responsible AI to solve complex industrial challenges, helping strategic industrial sectors adopt sustainable industrial automation. The partnership also includes the possibility of R&D collaborations with universities and research organizations. The partnership underscored the need for innovations in AI, network connectivity and advanced computing to tackle critical industrial challenges of efficiency, productivity, health and sustainability.
Nokia Bell Labs, a pioneer in Responsible AI, laid out six guiding principles for ethical AI development: fairness, reliability, privacy, transparency, sustainability, and accountability.
The President of Bell Labs Solutions Research at Nokia, Thierry E. Klein, spoke about the strategic partnership,
